In 1974 the park was established as an ecological preserve and it is located at the east end of the Varadero peninsula. This 3 square-kilometers of protected land is located at the northeastern end of the Hicacos Peninsula. The park has short hiking trails through the scrub forests. See a giant 500+ years old cactus or the Cueva de Ambrosio (a large cave with many ancient pictographs on its walls). The Cueva de Musulmanes is a cave where humans lived over 2,500 years ago. Varahicacos Ecological Reserve is one of Cuba’s best places to view up close the flora and fauna and also some of the area’s aboriginal history. Admission is very affordable: – Hiking trail to Cueva de Los Musulmanes: 5 CUC, – Cueva Ambrosio: 5 CUC, El Patriarca giant cactus: 2 CUC
